NB Power Rates To Rise April 1st

NB Power customers are going to see their bill rise starting April 1st.

The Energy and Utilities Board has approved a rate increase of 2.07 per cent for the residential class, which is actually higher than the average increase for others, of 1.77 per cent.

NB Power says the reason behind the hike is so they can continue paying down debt, while investing in outage prevention and reliability.  They also maintain that they still have the lowest electricity rates in the Maritimes provinces.

More Store Exposure For NB Wines

New Brunswick-made wines will be getting a lot more exposure.

A deal between the province's wine industry and Sobeys means all of its grocery stores in New Brunswick will now be carrying local wine.

Vins NB Wines executive director Joe Gallant says consumers will benefit because it means one-stop shopping for food and drink.

"It's a revenue generator for us because it is point-of-sales which we didn't have before.  We're going forward with it and it's a great partnership," he notes.

SAINT JOHN - After 17 years in the real estate industry, Jason Stephen is now Vice-President of the Canada Real Estate Association.

He was elected on Monday and tells us they work with the Federal government hosting hosting political action days every year.

Stephen says one ask they bring to government is too increase the limits for the homebuyer's program which has only changed once since the early 90's.

Federal Gov't Unveils Fund To Boost Innovation

The federal government wants Canadian businesses to become more innovative which is why a $1.26 billion dollar fund has been set up to support research and development in various sectors.

Federal minister Dominic LeBlanc made the announcement at the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute in Moncton which he says is a prime example of an organization which could access the funding.

"Our hope is that ten years from now, there will be 500 people working in a pharmaceutical and manufacturing facility of the university campus (Universite de Moncton)," he notes.

Dartmouth Woman Wins $100,000 In ALC Second Chance Contest

MONCTON - It took awhile, but Lottery officials finally tracked down the winner of $100, 000.

Diane Jordan of Dartmouth won the cash in the 2Chance contest on March 16th.

Efforts to contact her, by phone, email and even Facebook were unsuccessful, so Vanessa Matthews from ALC sent her a registered letter.

The letter urged her to call the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.  She was a bit skeptical at first, but the news made her day.

Green Party Leader Criticises Historical Inaccuracies In New Documentary Series

Provincial Green Party leader David Coon says the very first episode of CBC's new television documentary series "Canada....The Story of Us" got it wrong.

Coon says the first European habitation was in Charlotte County on St. Croix Island and not, as the programme said, near Quebec City.

Coon also says there was a barely cursory nod to the hundreds of indigenous nations who had flourished before coming into contact with the Europeans.
