NB Power Releases its First Quarter Financial Results

NB Power is saying it has had a pretty good year so far. In it's first quarter results it is reporting net earnings of $23 million and $14 million in debt reduction.

Among its operational highlights, New Brunswickers participated in an on-line survey for the Integrated Resource Plan, the utility and a subsdiary TransAlta Inc. reached an agreement to add 17.25 megawatts of wind generating capacity at the West Hills site.

The big highlight was the five-year renewal for the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station's operating license.

Plebiscite to be held on forming a Rural Community outside of Fredericton in York County

A vote will be held on October 23rd for residents of three LSDs or Local Service Districts, and two partial LSDs in York County near Fredericton for a plebiscite on community restructuring.

People who reside in Keswick Ridge, Douglas and Bright and a portion of those in Kingsclear and Queensbury will be voting on forming a new rural community.

 The York project woud  bring together close to 9,000 people and create a rural community with a tax base of $650 million.

"Atrocious And Insulting": Deputy Leader Of Federal Conservatives Lisa Raitt On Proposed Tax Changes

The Deputy Leader of the federal Conservative Party calls the proposed tax changes atrocious and insulting.

Lisa Raitt says small businesses are the backbone of the economy, and many owners have used personal incorporation to plan their financial future.

"This legislation takes that all away, and now they're left trying to figure out how they're going to have a financial plan that they probably set up for the next 30 years that's suddenly just gone like that, the rug has been pulled out from underneath them," says Raitt. "They're going to have to make significant changes."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott says the way the leaders have responded to the hurricane is immeasurable, courageous and heroic.

Abbot says he's grateful for the way they were able to evacuate so many people and minimize the loss of life.

He says to be able to get through the storm the way they did is nothing short of remarkable.

Softwood Lumber Decision Postponed

A postponement in the final decision by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, in the investigations of anti-dumping duty and countervailing duty of imports of softwood lumber from Canada.

That decision will now be made no later than mid-November.

Wilbur Ross Jr. stated he remains hopeful that a negotiated settlement can be reached that satisfies the concerns of all parties.

Premier Brian Gallant will meet with Ross today in Washington.

He plans to ask Ross to exclude New Brunswick from countervailing duties on softwood from Canada to the United States.
