Over the next five years, the Gallant government says it will create more than 1,000 new nursing home beds in New Brunswick.
Under the plan, 10 nursing homes with 60 beds each will be built across the province.
Premier Brian Gallant says staff turnover has been high in this field which is why $12 million is being invested to boost employee wages.
During the announcement Thursday in western New Brunswick, Gallant revealed the first new nursing home will be built in the Florenceville-Bristol area.
"We're also going to be able to get seniors that are in our hospitals, just because they don't have anywhere else to go, the chance to get the care that they need," he adds.
The province is also creating 407 beds in special care homes for anyone living with Alzheimer's or dementia and 19 nursing home beds will be added to existing homes.
