Premier Says Raising HST Is Not Illegal

Despite claims by the Opposition Conservatives that raising the HST is illegal because the proper legislation hasn't passed, Premier Brian Gallant disagrees.

He says the provincial government is on firm legal ground because of an agreement former Finance Minister Blaine Higgs signed in July of 2011.

Gallant argues the HST has to go up by 2 per cent to protect healthcare and education.

Hampton M-L-A Gary Crossman claims the HST increase will cost families in the province an average of 440 dollars a year and still the deficit is rising.
