Saint John Energy staff have switched out 180 elements on water heaters because of issues resulting from the water system change on the west side in September.
Marta Kelly works for the utility and tells CHSJ News the new water is causing more calcification on the elements on the water heaters.
"Some of our elements are failing prematurely so customers will have no hot water and they'll give us a call and we'll send out a technician to look at the tank," Kelly says "and in some cases we are switching them over to a different type of tank that tends to work better in hard water conditions."
Kelly says the homeowner does not pay the cost of replacing the elements. She says it's part of the rental rate. The water heaters that are changed out are retrofitted for use in parts of the city not using well water.
