While most of Canada has been celebrating a statutory holiday in February for a few years now, New Brunswick will mark its first Family Day on Feb. 19.

But the addition of another holiday is not necessarily being welcomed by the business community.

John Wishart, interim CEO of the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce, tells us it will have an impact on costs.

"All of us see the value of having a public holiday in the middle of winter, it's a long stretch between New Year's Day and the Easter holidays," says Wishart, "but any time there's a stat holiday added to the calendar, there is a bottom-line cost to business."

Whether a business stays open or remains closed, Wishart says costs would include paying employees overtime or giving them statutory holiday pay, which becomes one more thing that adds to the overall tax burden businesses must carry.
